The additional feature of the Freecom 1+ from its predecessor Freecom 1 is the rider-to-passenger intercom capability. The Freecom 1+ can be paired up with non-cardo Bluetooth intercom as well. The intercom range with other models is limited to the distance of the unit with the shorter range so in this case, likely the Freecom 1+ is the limiting unit.

Pairing - So far, I have only paired with it with another Freecom 1+ and not tried with other brand’s. Pairing is easy and there is no need to repeat the process once two units are paired.

Audio Sharing – The users can also share music with another paired unit. When I was riding two-on-one bike with my partner, we were able to listen to the same music on the ride. It takes only the press of one button to start and stop the intercom amidst whatever we are listening to.

Sound quality – Voice is crisp and clear. Wind noise is minimal and takes attentive hearing to take notice. When I called my partner on the phone, it took me some time to realise he was actually riding and speaking to me via the Freecom 1+. On the intercom, there is a noticeable but negligible millisecond lag. It gets choppy whenever we were riding near industrial areas and construction sites.

My partner and I still use the intercom function even when we are two-on-two bikes. We can hear each other in close proximity when stationary and riding up to 8 metres line in sight although it is not built for that. Bear in mind that the Freecom 1+ is built for only rider-to-passenger, not rider-to-rider communication,

If you already own an existing Bluetooth intercom system, the Freecom 1+ can also be a cheaper addition to get for a non-riding partner who often comes along as a pillion. The Cardo Freecom 1+ is available for S$199 at Chong Aik Int Pte Ltd

Travelling solo and on low budget, I never saw the need to invest a few hundred dollars in an intercom. Recently, Chong Aik approached me to review the Cardo Freecom 1+, an budget friendly intercom meant for solo riders or rider-to-passenger. I was quizzical and intrigued to hear about an intercom not meant for communicating with another rider – a gadget built for antisocial or solo motorcyclist like me in mind.

Keeping an open mind about it, I dug into my 2 years solo adventure riding memories, searching for the rational of having an intercom even when there were no other riders to talk to.

My riding-obsessive tendency on highways could mean continuously riding for many hours unbeknownst to the numerous calls I missed. It would be helpful to have voice guided GPS navigation during the time when my phone mount was damaged. While riding, it would be safer not having my eyes looking down at the phone for navigation too. These are real scenarios in which an intercom could have helped.

After using it for a week as a solo rider, here are some of the features I really like about the Cardo Freecom 1+.

- First look at it, with its slim width of 16mm, it does not stick out like an eyesore when mounted on the helmet.

- It is not only water resistant but is also waterproof with a rating of IP67. Bring on the torrential rain in tropical Singapore and it still works fine! (IP67 means the unit can be dropped into a body of water up to a meter deep for half an hour.)

- Battery life of 13 hours. Even if it goes flat, you can charge it while using it.

- AGC (Automatic Gain Control) automatically adjusts speaker volume and microphone sensitivity according to ambient noise. No matter what speed you are riding, you can still hear the intercom clearly. A big plus point of not having to adjust the volume on the go.

- Easy button access to receive and make calls and to switch between the different features. If you cannot remember all the button combination functions, you can use the Cardio Connect app to operate. The app interface is easy and clean. Buttons are big so you can operate it even with gloves
on.

- With parallel audio streaming, you can hear GPS instructions during a mobile or Bluetooth intercom call, or with music or FM radio playing in the background.

- Voice queries option. You can summon Siri or Google on your phone with the click of two buttons. I was able to make calls without touching the phone. However, the phone may have trouble picking non-English names. Instructing the phone to search and navigate places without having to touch the phone is a plus point.

- Bluetooth Twosome. You can connect to two devices concurrently - GPS, music player or additional mobile phone.

The only issues I have so far could be due to connected device limitations of my old phone.

- Not being able to accept Whatsapp call using intercom button when connected to my Samsung Galaxy J7. I use mobile data for calls when I am riding overseas. Still having to wipe my phone to accept Whatsapp call partially defeats the purpose of having an intercom. iPhone does not have this issue. I hope this problem will be resolved with future firmware updates.

If you only need GPS audio, music, phone and no conversations other riders, the Cardo Freecom 1+ is the ideal for the budget-conscious solo riders and also despatch riders who need to stay connected to phone while riding.

Sans the long-distance range communication feature, the Freecom 1+ retails at the much lower price of S$199 at Chong Aik. Until the end of July, there is 20% off, so it is going for S$159.20 and comes with 2 years warranty too.

If you ride with a pillion, the Freecom 1+ also boost rider-to-passenger 2-way short range intercom which I will be reviewing in the next post. It has additional cool features with a passenger. Stay tuned.
Packing for long trip can be a mind boggling task. As much as we would like to make our trip as comfortable as possible, space constraint do not allow us to bring much.

How does one tell if something is important for a extended trip? It takes time into a journey to realise what is really necessary and what is not. It took me around a month or two of packing and unpacking to establish a packing system that suit the daily travelling routine. Even so, the system changes with seasons and countries.

Here are some useful products and tips I discovered and learnt during the trip and from seasoned travellers.

Developing a Packing System

A convenient packing system usually revolves around the daily riding routine and essentiality of the items.

I compartmentalised my stuff according to how frequently it is being used and the occasions when it is used. Below is a layout of items on the scooter. For things that are used frequently, make them easily accessible.

The "Check In" bag contains my valuables and day-to-day essentials. When I check into a hostel or my host's home for the night, I only bring along the "Check In" bag. If I trek to somewhere without my scooter, this is also the bag I carry with me. Most of the stuff are left on the scooter.

My expensive camping gears are locked with PacSafe Backpack and Bag Protector. I always leave them on the scooter unless I am camping a lot.

I do not secure my tools because I do not think people wants to take my greasy tools. Besides that, they are easily replaceable.

Roks Straps are very neat accessories for strapping down bags to racks. I highly recommend them over hook end bungee cords. If you have not heard of accidents involving bungee cords, read this. Thanks Motology Store for sending me Roks Straps. You may grab some from them.

Do ensure the balance of weight on your motorcycle. The weight distribution affects the handling of your motorcycle. Try to keep the weight as low and as centralised as possible. I made the mistake of carrying my heavy engine cylinder in the front until I hit a rock.

Clothes and Shoes (Not fashionista-friendly.)

This really depends on your diligence in doing laundry. Wash your clothes or find a laundrette. Ideally, 3 or 4 sets of regular clothes and underwear are enough to rotate between wearing, washing, drying. Carrying less is more.

Opt for quick drying materials and convertible clothings. Dri-Fit, sports bra and bikini tend to wick off water faster. My favourite is motorcross jersey. It is comfortable, airy, dries fast, long sleeved, so that the riding jacket does not stick to the skin.

Convertible travel pants offers the options of shorts or long pants. You can simply zip off the cuff of the pants and get yourself a shorts.

If you are going to be travelling across seasons including winter, opt for layering instead of bringing a big bulky jacket. I stash some Uniqlo Heat Tech or Icebreaker inner wear in my winter pack. When the season comes, I wear them under my regular clothes. They are light and dry fast. And the thermal liner that comes with motorcycle riding jacket, I attach it under my windbreaker so it serves as my winter jacket.

Army Boots over Riding Boots

If you are going to do lots of trekking and walking, army boots maybe a good compromise for not bringing two pairs of shoes. It is waterproof, protects your feet, (but the ankle support is not as strong as those of riding boots), provides good traction and better comfort for trekking.

Don't throw away your old clothes yet!

Use them as rags for cleaning your bike or reuse them as petrol filter. Unlike established petrol stations, black market petrol seller or small petrol kiosk dispense their petrol in containers. Their quality is questionable. Presence of sand and debris is detrimental to the engine. Line the fuel tank opening with a cloth as you top up your tank. This way, any big particles will be trapped in the cloth. Be sure to always use the same side.

Laundry Tools

My preferred laundry bar costs only 40 cents!

FAB Laundry Bar. Personally I prefer this over the above travel wash. First, it cost only 40cents, Second, it is very very concentrated, I could get many more washes out from this 40cents laundry bar than Dylon travel wash.
Singapore – Malaysia

16th May 2015

The trip my friends and I talked about 5 years ago was finally happening. However, I will be doing it solo. Doing such a long trip requires big financial preparation and commitment. It is difficult to find people who are committed to it as we all have different priorities and expectation of travelling.

Days preceding the trip was crazily hectic. I was knackered from running errands, getting my visas sorted and catching up with friends. The only time for a break was when I leave for the trip.

Friends and family gathered at my block. My MP, Pritam Singh was also there to send me off. It was not a cheery sent off party with waving pom poms. The mood was awkwardly solemn. My family and I were hugging in tears. I could not bear the sight of my mum crying, the most.

I kissed my dog on his forehead as I always do. It may be the last time I am seeing my canine companion of 13 years old. He was diagnosed with heart problem a few months back. I do not know how many years he have left and I was unsure when I will be back.
Travelling to foreign land exposes you to bugs that are not endemic to your home country. Often, we lack immunity to these foreign bugs and are susceptible to them. Probably that is the only drawback to staying in a very clean country such as Singapore.

Falling sick on the road is a major turn off - you feel awful, your plans get disrupted, no comfort of your home for recuperation, language barrier with medical staff, dubious quality of the medications and medical costs are few of things to deal with on top of physical crankiness.

The good news is, many of the diseases can be easily prevented with prophylaxis or vaccines, or with some precautionary measures.

Travel Medicine Clinics can be found in the following Singapore hospitals.

Tan Tock Seng Hospital

Changi General Hospital

Singapore General Hospital

Khoo Teck Puat Hospital

Raffles Hospital

I chose to go Tan Tock Seng Hospital because everybody else I know went there for their travel vaccinations, even the assistant in my GP told me to go there. I later realised that most of the vaccines in Tan Tock Seng Hospital are cheaper. You can compare the price list below with the price list I found for SGH.

Due to the complexity and long duration of my travel itinerary, I have to consult a doctor. If you are unsure if you need to consult a doctor, you may call them up to check. I was informed that doctor consultation cost $68. I did not have to wait long for an appointment. I called up on Friday and was able to secure an appointment for the following Monday.

Before Your Visit

List down the places that you will be visiting, urban or rural places and the duration of stay. You may wish to do a quick research on CDC website to find out what is required for your destinations.

If your travel itinerary is complex and long, consult your doctor 2 to 3 months before departure. Some vaccines require booster shots over a period of one month to 6 months. Other than that, 4 to 6 weeks before departure is recommended.

Bring your health booklet along (remember that blue booklet issued in primary school? It holds your vaccinations record.) and any other records of past vaccinations. The doctor will thank you for it. Some vaccines confers life-long immunity and are redundant if you have them before.

Print and fill up this form. Attach a list of countries if the space is not enough. Provide tentative dates if your travel is open-ended in nature.

Make sure you are feeling well if you have going to receive your vaccinations that day.

For ladies, check if you are pregnant. Some vaccines are contraindicated in pregnancy. Doctor and nurses always ask when is your last period for this reason.

Bring a notebook to take down health advices from the doctors if you think you cannot remember everything.

If you are just interested in the cost of the vaccines at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, you may skip the rest and go to the bottom of this page.

At the Clinic

I was guided by the receptionist to the comfy couch in the waiting area and soon helped myself to a cup of hot Milo at the dispenser. Before I could take a sip, my name was called up.

In the office, the doctor introduced herself as Prof Lim. Over the next one and half hour, Prof Lim went through the list of places that I will be travelling and went through all the different health risk and precautions at different areas .

She occasionally referred to this book called The Yellow Book which is the CDC Health Information for International Travel. You can find the entire book here. There are advices for all the travel related ailments, from infectious diseases to altitude sickness.

Prof Lim travelled extensively when she was my age, sometimes solo, sometimes with friends. So far, she has been to all the continents except Antarctica. The consultation was at times like an entertaining story-sharing session.

"Once in a long while, I get special cases like yours. Open plan travel for a long duration. A few years back, I saw a couple who was travelling around the world on their motorcycle," she said. I knew she was referring to Goh and Samantha.

Whatever information found here cannot replace a doctor's years of expertise. Please consult a doctor for your travel vaccine requirements. I am different from you in terms of medical, vaccination history and travel itinerary. Please do not try to play smart alec based on information found on Wikipedia. They are not reliable.

After consulting Prof Lim, I need to get 1 oral and 11 injectable vaccination in total, covering almost everything! A nurse later scheduled the vaccinations with instructions from Prof Lim.

Common Travel Vaccines

Hepatitis A

This virus causes inflammation of liver and is transmitted by oral-fecal route. There is no cure for this, only supportive care available. You will need two dose. The first dose will last for 6 months to 1 year, the second dose administered within 6 to 11 months after the first dose will confer life long immunity.

I had one dose in TTSH, my next dose will be done when I am overseas. In order to find a reliable clinic or hospital for Travel Medicine, one can refer to International Society of Travel Medicine website for the global directory. Prof Lim explained that vaccines in developing towns or cities can be dubious in quality. Vaccines need to be stored in low temperature in the fridge or freezer. Frequent power outrage compromises the efficiency of the vaccines.

I eventually received my booster shot in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Hepatitis B

Most Singaporean were vaccinated against it when they are babies. Whether another booster shot is required depends on the antibody titre level in your blood. A blood test can determine that. If it is low, you will need another booster shot to stimulate your body into making more of the antibody.

I had my booster shot done as a poly student as it was required for my internship. I have family members who are chronic carriers. Donated blood are routinely screened for Hep B antigen, and in my case for antibodies too. Being a regular blood donor, I have not heard anything from the blood bank about my blood being unsuitable for donation.

Looking at my history, Prof Lim thinks I am already immunised so I do not need it. Always consult your doctor if in doubt.

There is a 2-in-1 vaccine for Hep A and B which is more economical for those who need both.

Polio

Remember that nasty bitter liquid that was dripped into our mouth in Primary 6. Another dose after age 18 will confer lifelong immunity.

Diptheria, Tentatus, Pertusis (DTP)

A 3-in-1 vaccination which is administered to all Primary 6 Singaporean students as part of the National Immunisation Programme. It lasts for only 10 years. If you are in your twenties, you will need another dose of it.

Diptheria and Pertusis (aka whooping cough) are highly infectious. Tentanus is transmitted via an open wound exposed to Corynebacterium diphtheriae which is often found in rusty or low-oxygen environment.

Chickenpox (Varicella)

Often known as a common childhood disease, symptoms in childhood are often mild. However, chickenpox in adult can sometimes lead to severe symptoms that requires hospitalisation. Our former Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong was hospitalised for Chickenpox at age 67.

I never had chickenpox. It is advisable that I get vaccinated. Chickenpox is highly infectious and getting it during travel means difficulty in finding a hotel or hostel that can take you in. 2 doses, 6-8 weeks apart confers lifelong immunity.

Japanese Encephalitis (JE)

This is caused by a virus transmitted by mosquito. Encephalitis means inflammation of the brain. There are incidences of JE throughout Asia, commonly in rural areas. You can click the link in the title to find out the geographical distribution. There is no cure for it. Fatality is 20-30% and 30-50% of survivor suffers from some form of brain or neurological damage.

Short term travellers restricted to urban area have little risk of contracting it.

There are two types of vaccines available for JE. I will be taking Imojev which is a one dose, life long vaccine and also the most expensive of all (S$380). As this is a live weakened form of the virus, Imojev is not suitable for pregnant women.

Typhoid Fever

Often associated with poor sanitation, transmitted by fecal oral route. Recommended if you are travelling to Southern Asia.

Rabies

Singapore has been enjoying a rabies free status for a long time. Getting bitten by animals is not as much of a big concern as in other countries. In India, threats of rabies are very real. My Indian colleague developed a phobia of dog because he witnessed how his uncle passed away after getting bitten by a rabid dog. If untreated, fatality is 100%.

The course of rabies vaccination includes 3 doses, at Day 0, 7 and 28. Completed course does not eliminate the need for treatment after getting bitten. It only simplified the Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP). Upon getting bitten or exposed, you will need two booster of rabies vaccination at day 0 and day 3.

If you have not received rabies vaccines before, the PEP is much more complicated. You will need 4 or 5 doses rabies vaccines over a period of 2 weeks to a month. On top of that, you must be administered rabies immunoglobulin.

Rabies immunoglobulin are very expensive (a few thousands dollars based on body weight) and may not be available in developing countries. They are antibodies isolated from a human or horse who has been previously been immunised against rabies.

Prof Lim told me cases of Bali visitors getting bitten by monkey. They had to be evacuated to Singapore to receive rabies immunoglobulin as it was not available there.

Yellow Fever

This is another viral disease transmitted by mosquitos. If you have travelled to countries with risk of Yellow Fever i.e South America, you need the Yellow Fever vaccination certificate to enter many other countries. I was not sure if I will be travelling there and asked Prof Lim if I could take the jab during my travel once I have decided. I could. However, it is better to get it done here because my records are here. If I ever lose the Yellow Booklet, I can always approach TTSH to retrieve the record. If it is done else where, it will be difficult to do so. Anyway, it confers lifelong immunity.

Malaria

Again, mosquitos are the vector for spreading malaria. Malaria is caused by protozoan Plasmodium.

There are no vaccines available for Malaria. Antimalarial tablets are the next best bet on protection. They have to be taken before travelling to malaria endemic areas and after leaving. There are many different types of antimalarial tablet out there with different pros and cons and contraindications. What further complicates malaria prophylaxis is the prevalence of drug-resistant strains of Plasmodium in different regions of the world.

I was prescribed Mefloquine based on my itinerary and budget. A small percentage of people have adverse effect to Mefloquine. I was asked if I had history of depression and heart abnormalities. I could have a test dose a month before departure to check if I fall into that small percentage. Do check with your doctor on this.

There is no one-for-all solution for malaria prophylaxis.

Since many of the above mentioned diseases are transmitted by mosquitoes, the other precaution is to prevent yourself from getting bitten in the first place - covering up, mosquito nets, coils, mosquito repellent containing DEET. The higher the concentration of DEET, the longer lasting the protection.

High Altitude Sickness

Prof Lim also covered high altitude sickness and pointed out the symptoms to look out for.

At the end of the consultation, she gave me prescription for the antimalarial tablet and medications for high altitude sickness.

Ending off....

There was a lot of absorb in that one and half hour. It was almost like attending Medical Microbiology lectures. If you have a problem with memory, do bring a notebook to dot down the advices.

On top of discussion on vaccines, Prof Lim also gave advice on food and drinks to avoid, i.e. no fresh veges and ice in drinks while in India.

So this is briefly what I have learnt about Travel Medicine. These are only general advices, but there are a lot more which I did not mention here. The doctor knows best and will be able to advise based on your itinerary and health condition. I hope this is helpful for your travel. I wish you good health during which. Do drop me a comment if you have any questions.

Pai to Chiang Mai.

The road from Pai to Chiang Mai is just another 136km. More meandering roads were expected in this stretch. At one point the bend was 90 degrees and up a 45 degrees incline.

Nearing Chiang Mai, I had a small mishap. Maybe I was too tired. While we were stuck in the traffic, I rest my back against my backpack on the rear. I got a little too comfortable and ended up falling to the side, almost knocking the tuk tuk next to me. The tuk tuk driver got out and checked on her vehicle immediately. A chap on a motorcycle nearby, stopped and scrambled to help me up. Once he checked that I was ok, he quickly left. I did not even get a chance to know his name and thank him.

The mishap cost me a broken right mirror and 500baht to replace it.

Just right next to where I fell, was an optical shop. For the past few days, Wei Jie's glass frame was flimsily held up with tapes. We decided to stop for a rest while waiting for Wei Jie's glasses to be fixed.

We dropped by Riders' Corner again as Wei Jie and Cherie have yet to say hi to Philip.

It has been 6 days since I left Chiang Mai on my own to meet the rest. Philip asked me how did it go?

I shrugged my shoulders and said "OOkkkkk...." with no mention about what happened earlier. I did not feel like talking about what happened.

Philip's wife kindly asked if we have our accommodation settled. Riders' Corner was already full so she brought us to another guest house nearby.

Mae Hong Son to Pai (Highway 1095)

We caught sight of a village with Chinese styled architecture. Just outside the entrance, a sign board showed Community Based Tourism. A quick google check on what it means.

"Community based tourism is tourism in which local residents (often rural, poor and economically marginalised) invite tourists to visit their communities with the provision of overnight accommodation. The residents earn income as land managers, entrepreneurs, service and produce providers, and employees."

Intriguing, we made a small detour and realised it also leads the way to Susa waterfall. A suicidal chicken almost became a road kill when it jumped into my path.

The road to the waterfall did not look easy and we had to pay. We decided to give it a miss. So much for supporting community based tourism.

The place looked quite forlorn, I am not sure if any travellers stays there, or even if any travellers know the existence of this place. If any of you stayed there, do drop me a comment on your experience.

Pai

At this season, guesthouse are always full or overpriced. We were very fortunate to find available rooms in this cutesy guest house called Oor-U-Pai. Probably due to the guest house being relatively new, it may not have much reception from Pai visitors yet.

The garden was adorned with vibrantly coloured flowers and windmills. Seeing more pretty flowers and plants in the interior and corridors could uplift any guest's mood. Considering the price, the mint state, the prime location and further bargain discount of 3 nights' stay, 500baht per pax a night was very worthwhile.

If you are lazy to lug your big tourer bike along to explore Pai, Oor U Pai also provides bicycles free for guest to use.

What drew our hearts even more to this guest house was the hospitality of the owners - a husband and wife couple. Hot tea, some snacks and fruits were served to us every time we return from a day of venturing. While we were having breakfast in the garden, the owner and his young son wiped the morning condensations off our bike seats.
After graduation, I was finally debt free and more free in term of time. With my penned up wanderlust and leave from 3 years of work, studies and vacation deprivation, I went on another road trip three months after returning from 3 weeks road trip on Vespa.

I was intending to travel Bali to meet Mario. However, another enticing offer presented itself. My biking khakis, Wei Jie, Cherie and Uncle Mike will be riding to North Thailand in December. Riding North has always been a yearly pilgrimage for them.

Months before the trip, I was given the uphill task of learning Japanese which I did not manage to master very well.

Whenever travelling to countries where the spoken language is not one I speak, I would very least learn the following essential phrases and expression.

1. "Where is the toilet?"
When your bladder is full, would you rather verbally express or physically express your desperately needed place for relief?

2. To convey our dietary preference or restriction if any. "I don't eat...." "I am a vegetarian." "I am allergic to....." "Not spicy."
Important especially if you have some health conditions or allergies!

3. "Thank you." "Please." "Excuse me."
Don't leave your basic courtesy at home.

4. For overland travel, "Where is the petrol station?"
English-speaking locals are hard to come by in small towns. If not sure, pointing to the fuel tank is quite explanatory.

Ok, with those essential phrases, and some simple phrases, particularly in asking for directions, I set off to Japan!

Being an ineffective polyglot, I sometimes spluttered something in Italian when I was asked something in Japanese.

When I was in Tokyo looking lost while searching for Canon Service Centre to repair my camera, an old uncle approached me to ask if I needed help.

I said in Japanese, "I am sorry. I do not understand Japanese." He ended up looking just as lost and confused as I was and later said, "But you speak Japanese!" That is what you get by with rudimentary grasp of a new language - confusing people. First thing you learn to say is "I do not understand."

Wang Kelian, Perlis

If you are looking for mountainous, meandering roads, flanked by hills, the ilk of Mae Hong Song, you can look no further than Wang Kelian, a miniature version of Mae Hong Song.

Situated in the smallest state of Malaysia, Perlis, it is a quiet kampung, visitors come here for the open border weekend market which straddles between Malaysia and Thailand.

Right turn. Is this a skate board park or what?

Long straight road juxtaposed after the windy mountainous road to render different thrills within the vicinity. Traffic was very clear, a vehicle pass us once in a while. At times, we have the entire straight road to ourselves. If you want to test your top speed, this is a good place to do so. For my 21 year old 150cc scooter, there is nothing to test. Test how slow I can go... Sure!

Maybe you have realised that I stopped numbering the days into the trip. When I was totally immersed in a 3 week journey, the number of days that went past seem insignificant. I cannot imagine if I were to embark on my belated gap year trip next year, I may simply forget the time to return home, when the only limiting factor was not time but money. "$1,000 left to the end of my trip" instead of "10 days left to the end of my trip." Money can always be earned again but not the time wasted not pursuing one's dream during the finite time we have on Earth. There, that comes the oxymoron that one need time to earn money to pursue your dream (if it requires money).

It was half way during our trip at Khao Sok National Park, that we began planning the route back. From that point onwards, we have a schedule to keep, not more "This place is nicer than we thought, let's stay for a few more days."

Krabi

We maintained our usual speed of 80 to 90 km/h from Phuket to Krabi. One of the perks I realised about riding slow, you are able to absorb in the surrounding vibe of your ride, you take noticed of little things that past you - elephants sauntering by the road side, a dog performing a balancing act on its owner's moving scooter, the occasional road users who gives you a honk and thumbs up. While it is still imperative to keep a look out on the road, I could give a bit more slack to savour the ride and the surrounding in totality. While riding, still engaging most of my senses - to draw in earthly waft of morning dew into my lungs, to appreciate the warbling of birds and to taste the rain if you stick out your tongue. Ok haha, maybe that is over-romanticising. (Don't be surprised if you see me sticking out my tongue while riding.)

We sighted this statue from afar, and Ah Weng signalled to pull over.

My sister shared the above video recently. Whoa, I am blown. The more I watch it, the more I cannot wait to start my adventure. The above is the ultimate video of a motorcycle traveller, collective of selfie clips recorded over 600 days, 36 countries. Amazing.

I usually do not like taking selfies but this video is too breathtaking that I had to muster up the narcissism in me. I decided to practise filming that for my future travels in the room using just my handphone, a monopod and a remote. The editing was done using iPhone app 'Capture'.

Khao Sok National Park - one of my favorite place in the 3 weeks trip. My friend Andy and Sim Eng suggested this place and since it is on the way from Koh Samui to Phuket, we can pay a visit. Andy and Sim Eng spent around 2 and half months riding around Thailand Laos etc. They lent me their maps and shared a lot of information with me, a first time rider entering Thailand.

They showed me photos of the Tree houses they stayed in, the lake and lake houses they visited.

Do you recall when you were a kid, you built little dwellings out of cardboard boxes or mattresses, blankets? In Singapore, most of us do not have a benefit of planting our own trees in our backyard, let alone building a treehouse. If you have the chance to live on a tree house, wouldn't you want to live there?

Living high up on the tree is like reenacting this childhood junglegirl fantasy of mine, but I guess many of you ever thought along that line, right?!
Since there is no direct ferry from Koh Phangan to Koh Samui that allows bikes on board, we returned to Don Sak and boarded another ferry to Koh Samui. (But I was told by the hotel receptionist there is a boat from Koh Phangan to Koh Samui at Buddha Pier. I am not sure if bikes are allowed.)

The first thing we did upon arriving in Koh Samui was to find a lodging. For this trip, we did not make any reservation for any accommodations. The night before we leave for another town, we simply check online if there is accommodation in that area.

We decided to stay 3 nights at Chaweng area and checked out around 4 hotels. The lodging near the beaches were either full or beyond our budget. This one was a street away from the beach, was new, with a pool and very reasonably priced. Parking located just before the reception area and there was a guard on duty at night.

I have been neglecting my blog for more than a month. A thousand apologies to my readers. I returned from a company trip to Japan a month ago. Before that, I was busy trying to pick up Japanese. I was only given 3 months to learn the language. And it was not that fruitful anyway because I do not have a native speaker to practice with.

I still have lots of videos from the August Trip to edit. Trying to edit those videos on a two year old MacBook is really a test of patience because it is slow. There are many things that I want to write that I wish that there is a USB port to my brain that can transfer the data to my laptop.

Ok, anyway, there is something that I would like to vomit out - It is about the virtue of listening. I am beginning to realise that many are losing that ability to listen.
We got to appreciate the resort when there was daylight. It was surrounded by limestone mountains and forest. Giant sunflowers and roses adorned the garden in front of the reception. The field right in front of our rooms was too enticing for me not to ride a bit of off road.
The ferry port was just two minutes ride away from the resort. We had to queue up with other vehicles to purchase the ferry ticket.
Our $5 headlight from scrapyard was put to test before the sun rose. It was good, lit up the road very well. Our travelling speed was 80 to 90km/h. We could go a bit faster but no rush, stressing the engine was the last thing we want. The target was to arrive in Ipoh to rest for the night. If we could not make it there before sunset, we will drop by the nearest town or sleep in the petrol station.
